FF3 and flash mp3 players

July 7th, 2008

You may or may not be familiar with the 1pixel out mp3 player for wordpress. If you aren’t and are into publishing songs in an easy to hear format.

After all who doesn’t actually have flash installed on their computer? I mean, jeez there is even an official gnu/linux version out there for all those geeks who have one less trip to the command line. Good news for everyone I guess, now that they no longer have to install some crappy plugin (read: RealMedia) or use quicktime or some other whatever to play an mp3 file on a website.

These players are simple, they open an mp3 file, read its contents, and use the magic of code and flashvars to create the sound. In fact some sites like http://www.youlicense.com rely on such flash code to help their business model.

Some places like http://myflashfetish.com use flash mp3 players for the myspace crew and I’m sure like the ad revenue they create through that pipe.

What I find odd is how even though many sites and many people use these players, will no longer see these wonderful devices. I pulled my own hair out for an hour or two trying to find out why my own mp3 players no longer showed up on websites.

My myspace page no longer had my favorite song playing. As the mp3 player no longer shows up. Go ahead, go to my myspace page (see right hand of this page). If you are using firefox v3 you won’t hear anything.

Go to youlicense and click anywhere on any link to any song. Click view source and search for .mp3 and see if you can find the flash player. Its in the code, but then why isn’t it being displayed?

Through my crazy intense research of using different browsers, I can see that as of now it seems to only be affecting ff3 as IE 6/7, opera 9/10, and earlier versions of Firefox all display the flash mp3 player.

Am I the only one? or is this a case where many users are going to have to yell BUGZILLA at the top of our lungs?

EDIT: Looking throught he 1pixelout website others are having a similar problem with firefox 3.

The EMFF player on sourceforge also seems to be affected by this.

So…

Got the hellraiser, and man is it a great guitar. The only thing I wish is that it was a brand new model and not the floor model that people have had their grubby little hands on. But it doesn’t bother me, I’m still going to take it in for a full tune up once I get my new set of strings.

Other than that I’ve been enjoying paying my own rent, gives me some weird type of satisfaction I guess.

Whatev…
